  • What happened to Dr. Adam Peck?

Adam Peck died from trauma sustained from a collision with an e-bike. It was after business hours and Adam was volunteering his time to attend a student meeting. As he was walking through campus to the meeting, Adam was struck by a cyclist illegally operating a motorized-ebike on a pedestrian path. Adam hit his head on the concrete pavement and never recovered.

The Dr. Adam Peck Foundation was created in memory of Dr. Adam Peck, who tragically lost his life in 2022 after being struck by an e-bike. What happened to Adam was preventable- and we are committed to ensuring it doesn’t happen to others.

Our mission is simple: to make our communities safer.

We work with colleges, policymakers, and organizations to raise awareness, advocate for stronger protections, and support legislation that keeps both riders and pedestrians safe.

Through research, advocacy, and awareness, we are advancing legislation to:
1. Establish clear insurance requirements for e-bikes and e-scooters
2. Create a nationwide sidewalk ban for these devices to protect pedestrians

We are currently working with legislators in Illinois and Texas to progress policies that we aim to expand nationally.

We recognize the many benefits of micromobility—affordability, accessibility, and sustainability. Our goal is not to remove these devices, but to ensure that as their use grows, safety grows with it—for riders and pedestrians alike.

By sharing Adam’s story, building partnerships, and driving policy change, we honor his legacy through action

We invite you to explore our progress, review our research, and join us by signing the petition on our home page.

Thank you for standing with us. Together, we can create safer roads, safer sidewalks, and safer communities.

Who Was Adam Peck?
Memorials

Adam’s special charisma captivated everyone from colleagues to friends and family; he had a rare gift for making everyone feel important and he managed to touch the lives of countless people including generations of college students. He loved making music, especially serving as band leader at the infamous Jackson Christmas Eve. His comedic timing, dad jokes, juggling, and gregarious sense of humor were the highlight of everygathering. Adam was an incredibly generous person and continues to provide help for others through the Gift of Hope organ recovery network.

Adam and his wife Michele were married for nearly 23 years. Together they raised two wonderful children, fulfilling his dreams of cheering from the sidelines at pee-wee sporting events and giving standing ovations as they took bows from the stage. The family spent 13 years in Nacogdoches, Texas, where he was a faithful and active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Adam was an educator for more than 25 years. He inspired thousands of students. From humble beginnings as a student in St. Elmo, Illinois, he went on to earn his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. His body of work is enormous. He wrote and edited several books, authored more than 50 scholarly publications, edited severaljournals, and presented more than 100 national and international webinars. He served on many national and state boards, was a frequent keynote speaker at conferences, and presented on at least 48 campuses around the U.S. and internationally.

Posthumously, he received TACUSPA’s 2022 Distinguished Service (Jim Caswell) Award and was honored as a NASPA Pillar of the Profession in 2024. Adam served as Assistant Vice President and Dean of Student affairs at Stephen F. Austin State University for more than a decade. Adam left a legacy at SFA. He advised many student organizations, lived “The SFA Way,” was a key member of the campus- wide COVID-19 response team and revived the axe handle tradition. He joyfully created and took on the role of Purple Santa at SFA and is remembered as the first SLU Blue Santa at Saint Louis University.

He moved to Bloomington, IL in 2021 to began a new position as Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs at Illinois State University. Always an ally and an advocate, he worked on many ISU Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives including The Rainbow Floor. He promoted kindness and raised safety and awareness through the Night Walk program, now carries his name in memorial. He is also memorialized through the TACUSPA Adam Peck Student Affairs Research Grant and ISU’s A Peck of Kindness program.

He is deeply missed, and his absence is felt every day.
